OVERVIEW

The University of Michigan (U-M) privacy statement recognizes the value of privacy of the university community members and its guests. 

This unit-level privacy notice provides more specific information on how the Museum of Paleontology’s Online Repository of Fossils collects and processes your personal information.

SCOPE

The notice applies to our practices for gathering and disseminating information related to the Museum of Paleontology’s Online Repository of Fossils (“we”, “us”, or “our”) and is meant to provide you an overview of our practices when collecting and processing personal information.

HOW WE COLLECT INFORMATION AND WHAT TYPE OF INFORMATION WE COLLECT

During a user’s visit to https://umorf.ummp.lsa.umich.edu/wp/ (our “Site”), we collect and store certain information in the following circumstances:

  • Direct Collection: We collect information that you voluntarily provide to us. For example, if you create an account with us, we will ask for your name, email, affiliation and username.
  • Automated Processes:  If you download any files from our site as a registered user, we will track which files you download. We also use Google Analytics to collect data about our users’ activities on our website, such as the number of visits to our site, the pages viewed, and the duration of their visits. Additionally, we use Google’s reCAPTCHA to protect our site from spam and abuse. A “CAPTCHA” is a test that we use to tell humans and bots apart. HOW THIS INFORMATION IS USED

We use the information that we collect to allow us to monitor website performance, make improvements to site navigation and content, and better serve our visitors.

WITH WHOM THIS INFORMATION IS SHARED

We do not sell or rent your personal information. We may, however, share your personal information in limited circumstances, such as with university partners or external service providers that support business activities.  

We require these service providers to keep your personal information secure, and do not allow them to use or share your personal information for any purpose other than providing services on our behalf.  

We may also share your personal information when required by law, or when we believe sharing will help to protect the safety, property, or rights of the university, members of the university community, and university guests.

WHAT CHOICES YOU CAN MAKE ABOUT YOUR INFORMATION

Direct Collection

If you wish to access, update, correct or delete any personal information in our possession that you have previously submitted via the Site, you may log into your account and make updates. If you wish to make changes not available through your account settings, please contact us at paleo-museum@umich.edu.

Google Analytics

We use Google Analytics to track your activity on our Site. If you do not want Google Analytics to collect and use information about your use of our services, then you can install an opt-out in your web browser (https://tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout). You also may opt-out from Google Analytics for Display Advertising or the Google Display Network by using Google’s Ads Settings located at https://www.google.com/settings/ads. You can also visit your device’s settings or install the AppChoices app to learn more about how you may opt out of receiving personalized ads in mobile Apps.

The University of Michigan recognizes the importance of maintaining the security of the information it collects and maintains, and we endeavor to protect information from unauthorized access and damage. The University of Michigan strives to ensure reasonable security measures are in place, including physical, administrative, and technical safeguards to protect your personal information.
